Spain Joins CLARIN ERIC As Member

Starting from 1 September 2023, Spain joins CLARIN ERIC – the European Research Infrastructure consortium “Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure” as a member. CLARIN ERIC is a digital infrastructure which provides easy and sustainable access to a broad range of language data and tools to support research in the humanities and social sciences, and beyond. CLARIN provides access to multimodal digital language data (text, audio, video) and advanced tools with which to explore, analyse or combine these datasets.

The CLARIAH-ES infrastructure brings together researchers from 10 leading research centres in LT, AI, HPC, SSH, and at main libraries on Spanish and Ibero-American written, graphic and audiovisual culture. CLARIAH-ES’ general objective is to coordinate the creation, development and dissemination of the infrastructure in order to contribute to the advancement of Spanish research in SSH and the Arts, as well as its strategic positioning in national and international projects and programmes, mainly in the context of the European Research Area.

CLARIN – infrastructure for language data and tools

In the Czech Republic, two large research infrastructures engage in the consortium activities. Czech National Corpus is listed amongst the CLARIN Knowledge Centres. LINDAT/CLARIAH-CZ that might have reached a broader audience due to the development of a publicly available automatic translator between Czech and Ukrainian, which gained recognition by being awarded Steven Krauwer Award in the previous year, is the Czech national node of CLARIN ERIC. LINDAT/CLARIAH-CZ has been cooperating with Spain for a long time. The infrastructure, for instance, worked closely with the HiTZ group of the Spanish CLARIN coordinator, Prof. German Rigau, to ensure technological and infrastructural equality for all European languages.
